Legal
Terms of Service
Effective 7 October 2026
The short version. Convoy is free and open source. Use it, share it and change it under the GPL. Download only what you have the right to download. It comes with no warranty, as the GPL itself says.
These terms cover the Convoy app for macOS, its browser extension, the builds published on GitHub Releases, and this website. Convoy is made by an independent developer (“I”, “me”), who you can find on LinkedIn. By downloading or using Convoy you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use it.
1. The license comes first
Convoy’s source code is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the GPL gives you. If anything here conflicts with the GPL, the GPL wins for the software. These terms add the practical points the license doesn’t cover.
2. Price
Convoy is free. There are no paid tiers, subscriptions, ads or accounts. If that ever changes for future versions, the versions you already have stay yours under the GPL.
3. Using Convoy responsibly
Convoy is a general-purpose download manager. You are responsible for what you download with it. In particular, you agree:
- to download only content you have the right to download, and to respect copyright law where you live;
- to follow the terms of the websites you download from, including any limits they set on downloading;
- not to use Convoy to get around access controls or copy protection. Convoy doesn’t download DRM-protected streams, and stops with a message when it finds one;
- not to use Convoy to overload, attack or disrupt any server.
Convoy isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by YouTube, Google, Apple or any site it can download from.
4. Installing an un-notarized app
Convoy isn’t notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to approve it the first time you open it. Official builds are published only on GitHub Releases (linked from this website). Each comes with a SHA-256 checksum so you can check the file. Copies from anywhere else aren’t mine, and I can’t vouch for them.
5. Updates
Convoy checks for updates once a day and asks before installing one. It installs only updates signed with the project’s key. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings → General. I may change, add or remove features in new versions.
6. Third-party software
Convoy uses open-source components, including Sparkle for updates. The optional YouTube helpers (yt-dlp and the tools it needs) are downloaded from their own projects only if you choose to install them. Each is covered by its own license, and I don’t control them.
7. Privacy
Convoy collects nothing and sends me nothing. The Privacy Policy lists every connection the app makes.
8. No warranty
Convoy is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. This matches sections 15 and 16 of the GPL. Downloads can fail, files can be incomplete, and websites change. Keep backups of anything important.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, I am not liable for any damages arising from using or being unable to use Convoy, including lost data, lost files or lost profits, even if I was told such damages were possible. Some places don’t allow these limits, in which case they apply as far as the law there permits.
10. Name and branding
The name “Convoy”, its icon and its branding are not covered by the GPL, and no trademark rights are granted with the code (GPLv3 section 7(e)). If you distribute a modified build, please give it your own name and icon. Apple, Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc.
11. Changes to these terms
I may update these terms. The effective date above will change when I do, and the full history is public in this website’s repository. Continuing to use Convoy after a change means you accept the new terms.
